After getting sufficiently pissed off at jekyll (I'm not a ruby developer, so dealing with ruby related tooling is a pain every time I need to) I realised that what I wanted was literally just a basic templating engine. I already use one of those pretty often - the c preprocessor. My personal website is just cpp macros / #includes now, and I honestly find it much more productive.
Probably not to everyone's tastes though :D
