Ask HN: Is Apple abandoning their Intel-based Mac Pro users?
First, I want to say that I cannot complain since I am currently running a Ryzentosh, but for all the other users out there that spent $$$ on a new Mac Pro with the promise of years of support etc. must be pretty frustrated right now.
AMD released their new GPU's 5 months ago but still no support for these cards.
There was some unfinished kexts added in macOS 11.1 public betas, but then somewhat reverted in 11.2 and no new changes in 11.3.
What does this mean? Are we witnessing an imploding partnership just like what happened between Apple <-> Nvidia? According to multiple forum posts, both companies refer to each other when asked about drivers. This sounds a lot like what happened just before the partnership went downhill and end-users stopped receiving Nvidia drivers.[0]
Maybe Apple holding on to these drivers because they want to get rid of their own AMD MPX cards first?
Or are they just going to straight up abandon all these Intel-based computers because of Apple Silicon-based computers killing off any kind of competition? It seems unlikely they would do this.
One could argue that these things take time and there are no reason to rush it now anyways when it's practically impossible to get a hold of these cards. I don't buy it.
Apple and AMD should be able to be proactive and have drivers ready or be transparent with what is going on.
It is this silence / pointing fingers that concerns me.
