Part of the reason that Dom and I are able to establish something along the lines that I suspect Lurie would have wanted is that we were coming along later. There is also a sociological component to the history. Lurie was forced by the community to choose a specific model to prove theorems about infinity categories, because the ideas were so new, and people didn’t believe the proofs otherwise.
Short version: Even Lurie wasn't ready to generalize from one example :)
Nothing to be ashamed of in any other part of mathematics, I'd say.
