Most of it is learned behaviour. There is nothing natural about it for children, but conditioning and culture largely makes us who we are as humans. So I don't see the need to look down on yourself for realizing something new. It wouldn't be new if it was totally familiar. However, the knowledge itself is thousands of years old, and also evolving.
