The moving sofa problem (2016)
- Sniffnoy 6y agoHm, the post gives a closed form for the area of the conjectured best ambidextrous sofa; is there one also for the area of the conjectured best sofa?
- dnautics 6y agoyes, but the article says it's piecewise 15 parts. I imagine for brevity it's not in there.
- erk__ 6y agoIt is on the MathWorld article, and as you can imagine it is not that pretty https://mathworld.wolfram.com/MovingSofaProblem.html https://mathworld.wolfram.com/MovingSofaProblem.html
- beervirus 6y agoFrom the linked video, it sounds like there isn’t one. He says that some of the constants used in the equations defining the various curves don’t have a closed form.
- m463 6y agoWow, I would like to see some animations of doing this for sofas going up and over the railings and down stairs. It works better with the sofa upside down.
- bluedays 6y agoOh, you don't need math for this. Try moving a sofa with my wife instead. I think fate/god/the universe/whatever designed some problems that are impossible to solve so that couples never run out of things to fight about

- User23 6y agoThose books immediately came to mind when I saw the submission title. In my opinion Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is Adams's best work.
- midasuni 6y agoPIVOT!

- dfan 6y agoThis is my favorite "easily explainable to someone who doesn't know math but still very interesting" problem.
