Just when you think there is no hope for this planet and for humanity something slowly emerges seemingly out of nowhere.
Fridays for future was one of those developments that caught me by surprise. Young people fighting for our planet while „angry white men“ claiming there ain’t no climate change.
Or take the sudden surge of interest in everything veggy / vegan. In Germany there is a growing demand for vegan products, and this demand seems to be very strong, because every grocery store has a growing number of vegan products lately.
I turned vegetarian last year not because I hate the taste of meat but because there are a dozen reasons we should not be eating meat. Environmental reasons, but also the pain we are causing these animals, every single day.
- harveywi 6y agoWhy didn't you consider cannibalism?
- nine_k 6y agoObviously, it still causes suffering, and the supply is even more limited.
- mutatio 6y agoInteresting, are there studies in climate change denial demographics?
- marknutter 6y agoWhat's with the casual racism in your post?
- txsoftwaredev 6y agoYou can't be racist towards white people. It would only be racist if the said angry black men.
- marknutter 6y agoOnly racists say you can't be racist towards white people. You, for instance.
- txsoftwaredev 6y agoIt was sarcasm LOL.
- marknutter 6y agoWell, I fell for it
- scottLobster 6y agoYou can buy ethically sourced/farmed meat (albeit at a premium), and farmed fish in particular is quite sustainable. I would dispute that there are "a dozen" reasons we should not be eating meat. There are perhaps a few practical reasons we should not be eating low-quality mass-market meat (health, environment, animal cruelty), and a few moral reasons we should not eat unethically raised meat. And even those reasons are debatable (what if someone in a 3rd world country can only afford unethically raised meat? etc)
- soyftware 6y agoAny source of meat is not ethical to the animals. Affordability almost doesn't matter. Staple foods like rice, grains, and beans are staple foods for a reason.
- jtdev 6y agoJust because you believe this doesn’t make it true. Do you think a pack of coyotes tearing apart a newborn deer is unethical too? Do you think farming grains and vegetables is without impact on wildlife?
- soyftware 6y agoHumans have moral agency, and most importantly, do not need meat to survive in 2020. Which is different than wild coyotes. Veganism according to the vegan society: https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/definition-veganism https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/definition-veganism > "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; ... Most importantly to the point, animal agriculture causes more suffering because we still need to farm grains for feed, more than we would have to otherwise. Reducing animal agriculture will have a positive impact on wildlife, reducing deforestation, etc.
- jtdev 6y ago> “we still need to farm grains for feed, more than we would have to otherwise. Reducing animal agriculture will have a positive impact on wildlife, reducing deforestation, etc.” Uh, where do you think Vegan friendly foods are grown? Do you realize that the earth must be cultivated to grow the vast majority of these foods? Do you think farmers of these foods take kindly to crop damage from wild animals? Beef cattle do not require farmed grain, in fact many graze only beef farms exist and the practice continues to gain popularity. I respect your choice to be Vegan, please respect my choice to reject lab grown goop.

Greenwashing PR Talk to any supermarket manager and they will tell you that the vegan specialty section is a net loss. HQ tells them do keep it, so they keep it.
- mleonhard 6y agoAre you claiming that all grocery stores sell vegan products as loss-leaders? Can you please share a link to some data on it?
- dj_mc_merlin 6y ago> In Germany there is a growing demand for vegan products, and this demand seems to be very strong, because every grocery store has a growing number of vegan products lately. As somebody who used to live there, I think this has more to do with the Zeitgeist. Most Germans feel nowadays that one should cause no harm, no offensiveness, and be completely environmentally & socially sound. Which sounds great on paper, but I've found it a recipe for a soul-draining society of "holier-than-thou" people. I do not mean this in the mean sense towards you, but it is one of the reasons I moved from there.
- Method-X 6y agoTo be fair, it’s like that everywhere now.
