Or maybe they are visually impaired. I'm always impressed when I sit next to a blind person in a train and hear them using a smartphone. The screen readers run at 2x normal speed (at least) and to my untrained ears the robotic noises just sound like a garbled mess instead of intelligible speech. The blind person using the phone, however, seems to have no problem understanding it. Fascinates me every time.
