I believe Xiaomi being Chinese is kind of red herring here. The thing about big data is you never know in advance what kind of data can turn into a gold mine for your business. So the strategy "collect as much as you can afford and get away with" is economically reasonable if not optimal. Until this changes, nothing will change. And Xiaomi is not an exception here.
