I think the author didn't misinterpret the situation. Just everyone else did. In my opinion the "emergency mode" of the NYT made everything worse. Why would the hold an emergency meeting if it wasn't an emergency. If they had just held their horses, the actually empty article of the "beast" would have fizzled. Note: I am not a media insider --- I don't like the authors response in this post. In part 1 he is basically groveling. He needs to provide the facts, and then shut up, instead of telling everyone how he "was active in africa", so he clearly can't be racist
