The questions that haunt me at three in the morning – De Pony Sum
- rektide 6y ago> Our period is defined by greater political divergence on the basis of age than ever before seen since we started taking polls on this sort of thing. > Why the aren't democratic politics more effective? these two I feel are related. Democracy is a kind of movement of masses but newcomers & outsider don't have any presence other than what they carve out for themselves. there's no onboarding, no enfranchisement, other than the major parties bothering to take notice & trying to recruit new voters into their big tent. it's bloody not enough. there need to be better on-roads to participate, to become a part of the system, to get to see & touch & become part of the democratic system, beyond being a voter. the system is too big & too busy to make room for the youth, & to a degree, the non-mainstreams. ibecause of this it keeps stratifying, bringing in only dedicated & already pre-disposed. the vibrant blood of diversity & the arena of ideals fails. I guess see also, "How to fix democracy: move beyond the two party system."[1] but I don't think that's enough either. we need to bring the youth in. we need to make power accessible. more parties helps in that there's hopefully more vibrant need for participants & ideas but ultimately I don't think it's directly creating the more pro-active, engaged, enabling democracy, that yearns to give new bloods tries & exposure, that we need to keep from becoming frail & gerantocratic & saturated by old money & influences.
