I don't think this is a new thing. I was raised in the 90s in a very suburban area and I never heard the n-word spoken and it was always censored when spoken when we read To Kill a Mockingbird.
- hn_throwaway_99 6y agoWhen in the 90s? I am very positive that the very first time I heard "The N word" as a euphemism for the actual epithet was from Johnnie Cochran during the OJ Simpson trial in 1995. I remember thinking that sounded awkward at the time because people would say things like "the F word" or "the S word" to substitute for those well known curse words, but "the N word" was brand new to me. I'm not saying Johnnie Cochran invented the term, but in my suburban area I had never previously heard that.
- WillPostForFood 6y agoThat is a reasonable and sensitive way to handle it. Things have change though, now To Kill a Mockingbird is being removed from curriculums for being racist. https://www.newsweek.com/kill-mockingbird-other-books-banned-california-schools-over-racism-concerns-1547241 https://www.newsweek.com/kill-mockingbird-other-books-banned...
- Andrew_nenakhov 6y agoWhat will they remove next, "Uncle Tom's cabin"??!
- AnthonyMouse 6y agoKind of a sad irony that they ban To Kill a Mockingbird over "racism" when it's a book about the importance of extending due process to a black man falsely accused of rape, happening at the same time as "Believe All Women" etc.
- dragonwriter 6y agoIt's being removed from curricula because parents complained about the perceived racist effects of the actual teaching of the book done in the district, and the district leaders found it easier to ban the specific books than to either figure out if there was a pedagogical problem and, if so, address it. The problem here is not “cancel culture", but “lazy elected politicians who don't take their duties seriously”.
- ReptileMan 6y agoWell the whole cancel culture is based exactly on that. The laziness of submitting to the crowd instead of taking a principled stand.
- billfruit 6y agoThen what will they do about Huckleberry Finn?
