Apple's ProRaw is why I reach for my iPhone and not my Google Pixel
- rektide 6y agoUnderstanding ProRaw[1][2] was a pretty great read on some of the technical capabilities. It's hugely appealing to have the data accessible to humans. Google has amazing computational photography, but the human is out of the loop. You can shoot raw, & it gives you a post-HDR "raw". Apple gives you the raw image, and tells you what tone mapping they are suggesting via a Profile Gain Table Map. This is a huge huge huge boost to human agency, jump starts a relationship with technology, rather than just some blackbox magic being handed to the consumer. Apple is organizing & making accessible the information of computational photography. Apple again makes the computational photography information available by storing a semantic map of the photo in ProRAW, identifying different subjects of the photo. It makes me so happy to see someone supporting & enhancing the creative arts with technology, generating more information on what is happening within the system & allowing humans to participate in these expert systems. I hope we see more/some competition to open up computing to humans.
