There is at least one pretty big battle in Easter Europe from 1100 bc. The battle was fought for the control of a bridge and chariots wouldn't have been useful there. The case was covered a few times on HN but I can't find the source right now. In general the bigger part of Europe was covered by forests until the middle ages when agriculture and industry displaced them.
