I disagree, the menus take up a lot of visual space, often for stuff that isn't used all that frequently. IMO, it makes much more sense for more actions to be done as a tab off the main content rather than via menus and popup windows. IMO there should never be popup windows when not explicitly requested by the user. As people are now used to mobile-style menus, hopefully (IMO) the older style text menu headings will fairly quickly go away in general. Keeping the other menus as normal menus does not describe what is happening in this case as the pictures clearly show.

- joveian 6y agoI gave it a try (Windows version) to see for myself how it works (it is exceptionally buggy at the moment and unusable). VLC still has an oddity that I only discovered reading HN VLC threads and playing around a bit, which is that if you add files or directories to the playqueue (as they now call it to distinguish the list that will actually be playing from saved playlists) via the media menu (which is what VLC calls the file menu) or if you drag and drop then the thing you just added will play immediately, however if you right click from the playqueue and add files or directories from that menu then it will add to the end without interrupting what is curently playing, which is personally what I always want. IMO, this should be changed to have the same configurable behavior both ways but as the new design is making the media menu slightly harder to reach it is encouraging use of the way to add files that works best. There are other icons at the bottom of the playqueue but not for adding files or save as playlist, which I think there should be. The four icons currently there are loop, random, sort order, and clear playqueue. The full menus from current VLC are there as-is under the ... icon. On Windows, the Video and Music tabs default to My Videos and My Music (this can be changed in the preferences; they should mention that and not just the network option) and can easily be added to the playqueue from there (again right clicking gives you more options than are otherwise obvious). The cone on the top bar does nothing and the left arrow changes the view to the previous view (i.e. from a video to the tabs that let you look at your media library). The button with the lines and music notes next to the ... icon shows the playqueue on the right side of the screen (up to half the screen when vlc is fullscreen). The three lines icon on the left is not the usual mobile menu (I guess that would be three equal lines, but still it is too close IMO), but just changes the media library view to list mode. The button next to it (lines with a down arrow) changes the media library sort order. IMO, this should be changed to match what the playqueue looks like (sort icons on the bottom, not at the top). I would also change the All or Playlists tabs to a Playlists Only button and put that, the playqueue button, the ... button, and filter on the top line if there is enough space. Similarly IMO, the icons at the bottom should be able to be on the controls line if there is enough space (to give the maximum amount of space possible to the playqueue and media library). There are still a bunch of popups for things like adding files to the playqueue if you don't use the media library or drag and drop; I'd prefer to use the space used by the media library for that (and have another tab for files outside the media library). Overall, I like the new design personally even though I would change some things.
