I grew up in that milieu, Canal street in New York and Yomge street in Toronto. Packed with all manner of parts, radio receivers and transmitters - all sold by the ton for pennies on the dollar. Commercially made parts were far more expensive at retail, so we bought and gutted all this WW2 stuff, removing resistors, capacitors sockets dials etc etc, and we used this stuff to make our stuff. Then along came heatkit.
Now the best source for stuff is adafruit or aliexpress. Same parts, but China via Aliexpress take 6 weeks, adafruit costs more but they deliver within a week or less.
There are a few parts places here and there, creatron in Toronto, and Surplustronics in Toronto. I do not know what JDR micro in the SanFrancisco area supplies now, or BG Micro in Garland Texas - both excellent surplus suppliers along with new stuff
