Diablo Canyon Is Shutting Down. Is California Ready?
- smadge 6y agoThis article only hints at the reasons why the plant should be shut down. Is there a good resource for why nuclear power is not a good option for California and why Diablo Canyon and San Onofre should be decommissioned?

- wahern 6y agoThe official reason is that California had required Diablo Canyon to rebuild their cooling system, to minimize continued impact on reef habitat. PG&E solicited bid proposals for a new cooling system, received some obscene number, and subsequently made the formal decision not to seek renewal of the relevant licensing. But everybody knows the real reason is because of anti-nuclear activist pressure. If PG&E was strongly motivated to keep Diablo Canyon open, they probably could have, but they'd deplete whatever remains of their political capital. In the end it just wasn't worth the bother. They have bigger problems to deal with, and more important battles to fight. And they drew that conclusion before some of the more recent wildfire fiascoes.
- asguy 6y agoI have fond memories of camping near Diablo as a kid. It’s a beautiful area, and being in the shadow of the nuclear power plant kept me on edge. Regardless of any narrative, I’m curious about the actual negative impact Diablo ever really had. I remember San Luis Obispo county activists promising it was going to be the end of the world. It doesn’t seem like their fears came to pass.
- LinuxBender 6y agoI believe DCPP currently supplies California with a constant 10% of it's power? Will that be a significant loss that the remaining grid can absorb easily or will it lead to more rolling blackouts?
