When you hear a pronoun mix like he/they, that's usually shorthand for "I use both he/him/his and they/them/theirs pronouns."

- Blikkentrekker 6y agoI understand the need for “he/they”; I do not understand the need for “he/him” opposed to simply “he”. If I see “he”, I and everyone else I would gather, would certainly assume that the object pronoun congruates.
- Karawebnetwork 6y agoOh, I understand what you meant now.
- detaro 6y agoI think the main reason is that, especially if used in general text (e.g. a general description field, not something specifically reserved for this), it makes it a bit easier to recognize as pronoun information by always following a distinctive pattern.
- Blikkentrekker 6y agoI would think that most people would understand a Twitter line such as “Algeria/programmer/he/FOSS activist”, which is how it is often phrased with the other things in such fields.
- pseudalopex 6y agoThe longer convention came first. And it's more distinct when spoken.
- damnyou 6y agoYes, most people would, which is why there's been a move towards what you're describing over the last 1-2 years. Language goes through a natural process of elision, of dropping what's unnecessary. This is no different. It's generally cis allies who put "He/Him/His" in caps and stuff anyway. Most of the trans people I know have just switched to saying "he" or "he/him".
- elil17 6y agoI think the original reason was for neopronouns, or pronouns that were recently invented. At some point there was quite a push to have a dedicated gender neutral singular (I believe it was ze/zir/zir/zirs/zirself) and so people who were using those pronouns listed them all out so people would know all the different forms.
- Blikkentrekker 6y agoAnd in that case, it would make sense, since one can't be assumed to know all the cases. But with “he” one can be assumed to know it, and I find it looking rather weird to state it. It's as though one put “Argentinian/Argentinians” in one's profile. — yes, I happen to know what the plural of “Argentinian” is.
- elil17 6y agoTotally agree
- sowjetthrowaway 6y agoit is shorthand for a mental illness. people will look back on shemales the same way we look back on lobotomy today
