Nvidia made $5B during a GPU shortage and expects to do it again in Q1
- KMnO4 6y agoI’m not surprised a company that consistently sells out within seconds is making money. What is surprising is their claim that mining only accounts for 6% of sales — though that seems difficult to verify (the cards used for mining and gaming are the same)
- blacksmith_tb 6y agoThey're trying to change that, though: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26192201 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26192201
- mey 6y agoExcept they are still useful for mining. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/rtx-3060-still-profitable-mining https://www.tomshardware.com/news/rtx-3060-still-profitable-... That's before the driver limit has been hacked out, which there is enough demand that someone will probably do it.
- heyitsguay 6y agoNVIDIA reps at my place of work have no trouble getting us A100s. Maybe this is too cynical but I think they learned their lesson after the Pascal generation was released - everybody bought the GTX series because performance/$ was way above what Tesla offered, even if Teslas were within budgets. This time around they can actually price segment for enterprise customers!
- fomine3 6y agoThat's also because of A100 uses TSMC 7nm meanwhile others uses Samsung 7nm.
- panpanna 6y agoCan't wait for AMD to focus more on GPUs now that zen 3-4 are done
