I find it paywalled, but note the current Moscow bureau chief writes:
> When I started this job I asked one of our editors, “What kind of stories do you want?” And the response was: Tell us how people live in Russia. We write about Putin, politics, and will continue to, but we also want to tell stories of people. The food people eat is a core component of the human existence.
Unlike most newspapers, the NYT retained a Moscow bureau through the foreign reporting collapses of the 1970's and 1990's. But it's not large. It seems smaller than a local TV news staff.

- lightgreen 6y agoI'm not talking about NYT in Russia, it's not their job to investigate there. Just reporting is enough. NYT doesn't do much investigative journalism even in the US. I don't recall any significant piece from NYT recently. Some interesting discoveries interspersed with speculations, factual errors and heavy opinions. Bite me, but Project Veritas (for example) does order of magnitude better investigations than New York Times. And Project Veritas investigations are mediocre.
