I replaced my dev machine (a fully maxed out 6 core i9 2018 MBP with 32 gigs of memory) with a Mac mini with two upgrades (16G memory, 1TB drive) and I simply can't tell the difference in performance. But I can tell the difference in heat and stability. And the Mac mini was about 1/3 the price. (I know it's not an equal comparison, but I was always using my laptop with the lid closed, hooked up to 2 4k monitors anyway.) I will happily upgrade to more power. I don't miss not being able to run virtual Windows because I offloaded that to my home server anyway and RDP into it when needed.
