Happiness does not equal to entertainment. It's called job satisfaction, not specific to engineers. Multiple factors can satisfy you. Pay is one of them. Some engineers can also take less pay in exchange for use of shiny tech because boring tech can be very demaning. But that's not always the case. In either case, one need to be happy with job to continue right? Or else one can find another job if they are not happy with pay, organization, food, location, ethics, abuse etc. It's not 1-dimensional.
