Happy people are more creative, and most engineering is definitely creative work. If most of your work is engaging or satisfying, it's easier to drudge through the bad bits.
It's not like physical work where you can just keep doing it and it'll resolve itself eventually; it is entirely possible to keep hitting your head against an engineering problem forever without making any progress if your brain just refuses to make the correct connections, and it's really difficult to tell if you're making progress or not.
In general, all people deserve to be kept happy, so removing barriers to happiness is nearly always a good thing.
