Ironically, Elixir is a great example of a success largely due to being based on “boring” technology
- methyl 6y agoSo it seems it took a boring technology and made it exciting. Way to go!
- dbattaglia 6y agoErlang and BEAM are an interesting one in the "boring" to "exciting" spectrum, being quite mature and stable with a strong track record of successful large systems built on it, yet I'd imagine still considered exotic to the majority of developers out there cranking away on "boring" languages.
- cpursley 6y agoI activity encourage folks to avoid Elixir. After working with Elixir, it's very difficult and demotivating to go back to Ruby, Java and the like.
- cutler 6y agoEven more difficult after you've been exposed to Clojure but I'd rather have Clojure any day than Java, .Net, Ruby or whatever.
- davidw 6y agoHow so? I've switched back and forth between Erlang and Rails at various companies. I still find Ruby a great way to get things done quickly and cleanly. I haven't used Elixir quite as much. It's a nice language, and I think genuinely improves on Erlang in some ways, but it's more the BEAM system that I like about it rather than it being a lot more productive than Ruby.
