Uncontained engine failures are a big deal. Exactly because they're a risk to the plane, as debris can cause other failures, and a risk to people on the ground. Engines are specifically tested to see if they can contain these failures. This doesn't seem routine at all.
- JCM9 6y agoYes, hence why I said the press will focus on this because of parts raining down. An airliner having an engine issue and returning single engine though is a routine thing... usually without missing parts.
- pedrocr 6y agoUncontained engine failures are cause to ground whole fleets of planes, even if the resulting emergency ended up mild. You're downplaying it way too much.
- leesalminen 6y agoAlso a similar event has happened before on a United Boeing 777-200 en route to Hawaii from Denver in 2016. http://avherald.com/h?article=4999bec5 http://avherald.com/h?article=4999bec5 Also another similar event on a United Boeing 777-200 en route to Hawaii in 2018. http://avherald.com/h?article=4b4e8ca7 http://avherald.com/h?article=4b4e8ca7
- Cederfjard 6y agoWhen you say things like ”the press will make a big deal out of this”, one might take it to be implied that they shouldn’t. I hear you that returning with one engine might be fairly routine, but isn’t it fair to make a thing out of large chunks of metal falling from planes over populated areas?
- Waterluvian 6y agoI think you're both right. I think it's routine in that once the disaster occurred, the emergency procedures to get the plane safely landed were executed without issue. I'm guessing kind of like firefighters describing a call as a routine, by the books operation.
- s1artibartfast 6y agoThey are both a big deal and expected. 3-4 happen per year and this is why pilots train for them.
- rectang 6y agoUncontained engine failure caused the 1989 Sioux City crash of United 232, when debris took out all three hydraulic lines. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_232#Takeoff_and_engine_failure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_232#Tak...
