Google fires top AI ethics researcher Margaret Mitchell
- jjeaff 6y agoHow can we be sure this wasn't something engineered by the AI itself?
- ipsocannibal 6y agoThis seems to be part of a wider restructuring of AI teams at Google. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-18/google-to-reorganize-ai-teams-in-wake-of-researcher-s-departure https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-18/google-to...
- LatteLazy 6y agoI'm still not clear what the huge injustice at the core of this is meant to be. There is a lot of innuendo, then it just links to another fact free article or a tweet saying someone was fired. Full disclosure: I am pretty STEM-centric so the whole idea of being an ethics researcher seems questionable to me... Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timnit_Gebru https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timnit_Gebru The intro and Leaving Google sections don't show any actual basis controversy. It seems to come down to her work being questioned, her threatening to resign and Google "accepting".
