Yes definitely. I try to find some more generalized, non-controversial statement that we both agree on. It's easier from that point to figure out what exactly we disagree on and why. It also serves as a litmus test. If the other person isn't even willing to take an agreeable tone to something that's not controversial, then I know I'd be spending my time more wisely by doing something else.
