U.S. Airports No Longer Have to Build Their Own Terrible Trains
- twobitshifter 6y agoSadly a little too late for the LA Crenshaw line. The airport stop is like so many other places, not actually at the airport and a people mover will be needed.
- laurencerowe 6y agoDon’t airports with multiple terminals end up needing a people mover anyway? Would have made more sense for Bart to terminate at Millbrae and extend the SFO air train to it so Caltrai/Bart transfers worked better.
- mleonhard 6y agoThe train can simply stop at each terminal, just like it does at downtown subway stops.
- bobthepanda 6y agoThe problem is that airports like LAX are in a loop away from a main road. If the light rail diverted into said loop to serve the terminals directly, it would slow down the trip of everyone not going to or coming from the airport.

- linksnapzz 6y agoDoes this explain the nonsensical state of the MBTA Blue Line, which despite going RIGHT INTO EAST BOSTON manages to barely graze Logan? I had heard that the cab companies made sure the T doesn't have a grade-separated line to the airport, so as to ensure fares. I wouldn't put it past them...
- coin 6y agoSame as how the San Jose light rail comes within less than a mile of San Jose airport but doesn’t actually connect to it.
- masonic 6y agoEven the Mercury News is acknowledging how hopelessly inept VTA oversight is: https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/02/18/bill-would-scrap-south-bay-transportation-board-that-critics-say-fueled-crisis-long-before-coronavirus/ https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/02/18/bill-would-scrap-sout...
- krallja 6y agoNew York City has the most frustrating connections to all three of its airports from downtown Manhattan: EWR 1. PATH to Newark Penn, or subway to Penn Station 2. NJT to Newark Airport 3. Super-long AirTrain to the actual terminals 2 & 3 are on a single fare, at least. JFK Subway to LIRR to AirTrain LGA Subway to a bus
- linksnapzz 6y agoNYC has three large airports, and a subway system that connects directly to exactly none of them. The fact that one can fly into LGA on a regional jet to take an international flight out of JFK...but have to take a bus through Queens with one's luggage to get from one airport to the other never ceases to amaze and infuriate me.
- bobthepanda 6y agoOne really should not try doing this as a connection, the same way that trying to connect from Gatwick to Heathrow or Haneda to Narita is extremely inconvenient.
- souprock 6y agoThis sort of connection should be done by rail that stops within the security perimeter. Rail trips would get flight numbers. You wouldn't touch your luggage.
