Graffiti Networks: A Subversive, Internet-Scale File Sharing Model (2011)
- eternalban 6y ago"Using involuntary web sites as storage dumps seems counterintuitive if the main goal of the network is data persistence and availability, since replicas are promptly re- moved when site administrators and moderators discover them. The Graffiti model overcomes this challenge and takes advantage of “free network storage” through a mas- sive replication and obfuscation process." They buried this nugget in section 3.3 ;) tldr; Graffiti forces clients to replicate the files they download to as many "storage sites" as possible. It does this to insure long term availability. A bit further down in the same 3.3 section, it finally dawns on this slow one :) why it is called Graffiti: "[M]any sites, such as wikis and message boards, often display the network location of the user responsible for adding new content or making changes to their pages, which makes it difficult to deny responsibility for participating in illegal activities. We argue that by fracturing a fileset’s replicas across hundreds of storage sites, it is difficult to be fully implicated when only a fraction of the evidence is available."
