We Can't Tell Good Wine from Bad
- nabla9 6y agoEven when you can taste small difference, if you stop thinking that one must be is better than another, you can enjoy both the same. You can make yourself to enjoy things just by changing the attitude. Taste is for detecting spoiled and rotten things. Almost everything else is just cultural programming.
- jfengel 6y agoWhen you look for the small differences, "better" becomes the same as "different". Ordinary wines all taste very similar, while supposedly "great" wines are more distinctive. It's much like movies: summer blockbusters are all pretty similar, at a coarse level, while smaller indie films have more range. It doesn't make them better or worse, just different. That is, as you say, cultural programming. You don't have to buy into it. You have a million options for your hobbies. Which is what wine tasting is -- a hobby. It just so happens to be a hobby with a very high-profile high end, but you don't have to play that game to find wine interesting. The differences between a $50 wine and a $5 wine are pronounced enough to be interesting.
