Honest question... am I the only one who thinks this article isn’t appropriate for HN?
- MilnerRoute 6y agoI've asked myself how many Hacker News readers are female. Maybe a related question is: would that make a difference to its appropriateness here?
- CyberRabbi 6y agoStill don’t think it is. This article is about Japanese politics. I’m sure there are some hackers out there that have an interest in this but in the general case will just cause a flame war amongst bike shedders who have no strong interest in Japanese politics.
- MilnerRoute 6y agoI think the main focus of the article is not "Japanese politics."
- krapp 6y agoAnd even if it were, we've had articles about Japanese politics here before, and no one has complained.
- tpush 6y agoGiven the usual type of responses to these kind of articles, we probably need a whole lot more of them.
- isitdopamine 6y agoMore articles supporting your viewpoint until your viewpoint is agreed by all? This is incredibly patronizing. Can’t you think for a second that people can have a different opinion, and that doesn’t need to be somehow corrected/educated out, but just understood? Viewpoint diversity matters. Not everyone believes in feminism, very decent people believe in different gender roles for men and women.
- elygre 6y agoHonestly, I don’t agree that very decent people think it’s ok that women should not talk at meetings.
- isitdopamine 6y agoOn the other hand, (some) feminists believe that each meeting should have 50% of women, regardless of merit. This is also not very decent, in my opinion.
- me_me_me 6y agoIf someone judges a man/woman/anything based on superfluous characteristics, like colour of skin, gender etc. they are basic people. And they have nothing interesting to say, because they live in a simple world of black and white where premade categories 'solve' all of worlds complexities. Go to flat earth people and try to understand them, you will only gain a brain aneurysm.
- isitdopamine 6y agoThat’s a false comparison. One can believe that men and women are equally worthy, while also observing that at the same time biological differences (testosterone) lead to behavioral differences. The mere observation that there could be less than 50% women in tech, or in some business meeting because they might not be interested, does not deny women’s dignity.
- me_me_me 6y agoAvg man run faster then average woman. That is obvious truism. All this transgender females competing with biological women is a farce. But aren't we talking about intelligence and intellectual capabilities? Because there is no difference there. There was great articleI read few months back from math statistician on chess playerbase. Statistics on such lager dataset don't lie. Woman are as capable in chess even though its 'male' superior sport. Its just there is less of them in the player-base.
- Pfhreak 6y ago> On Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity. I'm a good hacker (imo). I found this interesting, particularly because I was around during the 80s when US culture basically considered Japan to be an unstoppable machine. Watching the course of Japanese economic, social, and political history over the past 40 years certainly satisfies my intellectual curiousity.
