Biden Removes ‘We the People’ Petitioning from White House Website
- docdeek 6y agoSource isn't familiar to me but Newsweek fact checked it and it seems legit. https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check-did-biden-administration-remove-white-house-petitioning-system-1570052 https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check-did-biden-administration...
- krapp 6y agoI'm OK with this. It's not as if these petitions gave the people any actual power or influence over the government or policy, just a PR response for reaching 100K votes, which is bread and circuses. If people want to be engaged with government they should do so through avenues which actually matter, local activism and voting.
- recrudesce 6y agoThe UK has one of these things too. 90% of the time the response is "the government has no comment on the matter" and it just gets closed. People raise petitions purely for media attention more than anything else. https://petition.parliament.uk/ https://petition.parliament.uk/ if you want to take a look.
- airhead969 6y agoThe petitions were ostensible participation but deceptively worthless. George Carlin was a sage: Voting has much less impact than people think because primarily the rich direct things and have their interests met. Participating in a fraudulent, corrupt system merely legitimatizes it. Real participation would be welcomed, but it will never happen as things are. (RPI is a libertarian nut tank.)
