To be fair, I've had the same experience with the Wall Street Journal (you must speak to a human and they try to give a few months free) and French newpaper Le Monde (where I even had to pay 5.50 euros to cancel via certified mail). On the contrary, canceling my yearly membership with Barnes and Noble was a breeze.
