The biggest thing Starlink will bring is competition now people will be shocked at how the older ISP's are suddenly able to provide better speeds for cheaper and no download upload limits. Just like it area where google fiber was introduced.

There is a big difference between delivering some hardware to 10k people vs. 400mio people. I will not be surprised if Starlink manages to be price-competetive within the next 3 to 5 years.
- thebigspacefuck 6y agoI’m of the opinion people like to massively overpay for their Internet and speeds paid for are underused. I’m on 25Mbps at $40/month. I was on 75Mbps for a bit and I don’t notice the difference except if I’m downloading a 90 GB game or something. My ISP could probably give me 200Mbps and neither of us would notice. Still waiting on the killer app for fast Internet. Surprisingly TMobile’s 5G on the iPhone 12 is giving my dad 60Mbps download and he’s on a cheap unlimited data plan so I’m wondering if that’s what is going to put more pressure on existing ISPs. 5G adoption has probably been kind of low so those speeds may not hold.
- 0xffff2 6y agoThe primary ISPs competing with Starlink are geo-stationary satellite internet providers. They can't compete with Starlink just based on the speed of light delays inherent to being in GEO. Once I can get Starlink, Hughesnet can offer their service for free and I'll still be more than happy to tell them where to shove their dish.
