I am mostly talking about my own peers in the Bay Area, which is the subject of this conversation. A significant fraction of people in tech, around my age, here in the Bay Area have parents who are late-career in even more lucrative professions, such as real estate, finance, law, medicine, etc. A lot of them have investment properties in the area. If you go to HotPads or Apartments.com, who do you think are the small landlords you're renting from?
