Wow they've blocked the Bureau of Meteorology page, no more weather warnings on fb. All of ABC too (our BBC equivalent), though they were not required to pay for ABC content, so it seems pretty bitchy.
- denismi 6y agoThe legislation was subsequently amended to include ABC: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/abc-sbs-included-in-news-media-code-as-tech-giants-win-some-concessions-20201207-p56l7h.html https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/abc-sbs-included-in-... (Hopefully YC doesn't have to pay for this link one day)
- angry_octet 6y agoGood good. I'm all for making fb a barren content free wasteland. It was a mistake for public sector to build engagement on a platform where they were tenants without rights. They could have put the rights in with legislation first, but were always at mercy of the algorithm and having to pay for placement.
- bryan_w 6y agoAlso I believe that to stay within the bounds of the law they have to prevent _any_ news site from being linked and block all Australia news sites from being shown internationally
- angry_octet 6y agoIt seems such a broad interpretation that they block satire of events too (Betoota, Chaser), but strangely not dis/mis information crackpots like Friendly J##dies, even though he claims to be independent media. I would check if you can 'like us on Facebook' but I can't find any buttons! What happened, they used to be everywhere?
- coffenjam 6y agoThey're banning emergency services as well ("by mistake"). They probably just want to increase the backlash. The emergency services Facebook pages will obviously be back within hours. I live in Australia but I don't have a Facebook account and I don't read the fake news media, so I actually don't have a horse in this race. I hope they both mutually destruct each other.
- King-Aaron 6y ago> fake news media Uuugh we all know that media is undoubtedly biased, and a lot is quite skewed to match an agenda.. But can we please refrain from regurgitating that Trump campaign catchphrase?
- angry_octet 6y agoPretty much the same, deleted the apps years ago, I log on with an isolated browser profile every few months to see what madness the crazy uncle posts. FB Messenger is hard to dislodge though, for so many people it is their main comms system. Likewise WhatsApp. Luckily I have a burner phone for those, location features turned off. Govt will probably come crawling back to fb on its belly. If they don't the ALP will.
