I sympathize with the people in the article! My solution to improving my financial well-being during the pandemic has been to swallow my pride and move into one of my parents' investment properties in East Bay. As a bonus, I'm learning to be more handy by taking on moderate home maintenance tasks!
Considering that most young people in tech have parents significantly wealthier than them, it's amazing to me that more people don't pursue this route and insist on throwing money away on rent.
I know it's not as cool as the bohemian atmosphere of living with startup teammates in a shared house, but living rent-free in your family's spare home is the responsible and quick way to save tons of money!
- blacksmith_tb 6y agoHmm, my one surviving parent lives in my own investment property (which is not a very good investment, but at least allowed us to keep his rent from spiraling ever higher). He does have a nicer woodworking shop than I do, so at least is good for some repairs!
- magneticnorth 6y agoI am somehow both sure you are joking and also wondering if you are a co-worker of mine who legitimately is doing this.
- leesalminen 6y ago> Considering that most young people in tech have parents significantly wealthier than them Citation needed. Thinking back, only 2-3 devs (out of 100-200?) I know come from families wealthy enough to have empty houses to spare. At least AFAIK.
- legerdemain 6y agoI am mostly talking about my own peers in the Bay Area, which is the subject of this conversation. A significant fraction of people in tech, around my age, here in the Bay Area have parents who are late-career in even more lucrative professions, such as real estate, finance, law, medicine, etc. A lot of them have investment properties in the area. If you go to HotPads or Apartments.com, who do you think are the small landlords you're renting from?
- dmode 6y agoWhere did you move in East Bay ? I live in an East Bay suburb and it is amazing. Great schools, rural, hilly, forested, great community, diverse, huge lots, and yet only 10 mins from Oakland Berkeley for all urban fun
- legerdemain 6y agoI'm in Walnut Creek... I guess not really East Bay anymore, but it's fine for what it is.
- dmode 6y agoWalnut Creek is nice. I go to Mt Diablo frequently
