Why do they need to go public? Are they hoping that more ad buying power is going to provide them economies of scale? Graphic designers aren't that expensive to employ are they?

They need money. And the investors would like to cash out before the company runs out of money.

The general impression is that the founders sold their shares to a VC fund with the intention of the VC fund returning their capital with an IPO.
