Stack Overflow exists because we are terrible at documentation.
There should be a straight up solid answer for 80% of those questions in the relevant docs.
Docs should have walk-throughs / overviews, common examples, and good reference with links to examples.
And then a ton of secondary examples related to every corner, explaining everything.
If it's not clear, then guess what? We all have to figure it out!. Every one of us has to labour through APIs to make those 1-5 a day mini-insights, when, if the docs were clear, we should not have to.
If I 'owned' Java I would consider every common question about Java that wasn't made clear in the docs a failure of some kind.
Not only that - why on earth do people think that publishing an API is good enough? Why doesn't Oracle/MS have respectable team of people literally just answering SE questions all day on Java/C#/TS etc. giving fairly definitive answers? I can only imagine this would have spectacular ROI. (I mean, aside from getting the free labour of volunteers, but MS can affordit)
- tannhaeuser 6y agoThere used to be the "FAQ" format for product/project documentation covering points that don't fit into regular documentation. There's also the format of "case studies". Not sure SO should be a place for the likes of Oracle/MS to answer questions about "their" language stacks. AFAICS, Oracle has pretty much pulled out of pushing Java years ago anyway. In contrast, MS is all over the place to advertise .net and TS. Don't need more of that on SO, with staged questions and distortion of public reception by sheer volume and SO stats.
