Welcome Aboard the R-100
- ggm 6y agoJ.E. Morpugo's biography of Barnes Wallis (bouncing bombs, swing-wing aircraft) discusses the influence of the r100/r101 design process and the crash, in his career development and thinking. He was one of the engineers in the r100 design (not the one which crashed in the alps, that was the r101) Nevil Shute (no highway, on the beach, a town like alice) in 'slide rule' talks about his experience doing complex mesh stress/strain calculations for r100s framing which was a mixture of duralumin compression struts and wires in tension. All done with a slide rule. You plug in a guess, you run the numbers. When you find a wire in compression, you curse, and you start again with another number/guess. He worked under Barnes Wallis. Funny to have two distinct write ups of the experience of working on these beasts.
