Slate Star Codex and the Gray Lady’s Decay
- savanaly 6y agoThe more I think about the feminists-Voldemort part, the more convinced I am that the NYT was malevolent and not just incompetent in writing and publishing their article. If Scott is correct in his assumptions about the timeline of edits to his original piece where the Voldemort comment was made, the reporters had only ever had a chance to read the version where he in all caps and with strikethrough of the original comment disavows the original wording and begs for it not to be taken out of context. Then the NYT did exactly that, to exactly the sentence they were begged not to take out of context. It's hard to read that as anything more than a knowing wink from an abuser to their victim, a little inside joke to let him know that they've got his number. Like they could have selected from hundred or thousands of available quotations of his over the years to take out of context to make him look bad, and they chose one of the very few where he calls out in the next sentence that it should not be taken out of context to make him look bad. I remember when I originally read his request to not take out of context "that's fine Scott, you're covered here, but what about all the other things that can be taken out of context?" Little did I know that NYT would just not care and do it anyways, because they can.
