I like VLC because IT IS a file opener. I don't want a "media environment" to immerse in. We have Kodi for that.
However,
1. the VLC team have been great so far
2. they do need to better expose the many other capabilities of VLC other than playback.
Until I see it I am dubious-but-hoping-for-delight.
- 1_player 6y agoWith all respect to the VideoLAN team, my impression is that VLC is fantastic on a technical point of view, but UI and UX wise it is a disaster, making discoverability of its features a nightmare. I agree, I want a video player, the fact that they want to add even more features on a super complex and confusing UI does not bode well for the future, IMO. Honestly, I just want IINA for Windows and Linux. That app sparks joy in me.

And for us oldtimers, we know from history that all neat useful single-purpose projects that try to grow into something huge (winamp & Azureus trying to become a full media station, the Netscape site & Altavista becoming a "portal for all needs") fail and fall into oblivion. For a scary number of previous instances the expensive super-expansion of a project is to me, the early indicator of it going to disappear when the huge profits mysteriously did not materialize. Perhaps this is different and they don't mess up, otherwise someone probably will whip up a simple file selector wrapper over ffmpeg/mplayer or something and we will have a decent media player back. There is a need for something that ONLY plays your files without being a kitchen-sink utility.
