Ark 1
- pimlottc 6y agoIs this anything more than someone’s design thesis project? I can’t tell.
- nodesocket 6y agoWhat exactly am I looking at here?
- s_tec 6y agoI think it's basically a weird-looking RV.
- pavel_lishin 6y agoA weird looking RV you can only rent, which includes access to a bunch of other bolt-on subscriptions.
- c-smile 6y agoThat's Tesla as it was originally drawn by Mr. Musk. You know, tough childhood, all that.
- ohazi 6y agoDystopian survivalist / prepper porn with a bit of late-stage-capitalism thrown in as flair.
- tomcam 6y agoThe TempleOS of cars
- andrewmcwatters 6y ago> PROBLEM: owning property is largely out of reach > How much will my ARK 1 subscription cost? > Your ARK 1 subscription estimate: > 365 days, ~12 month > $4,050/month
- idsout 6y agoHow do links make it to the front page of HN with 13 points? Genuinely curious. Also what is this?
- geek_at 6y agowell it's easy if you have 12 friends

- Sophistifunk 6y agoIt's some student's final project in design class, and has no business on the front page.
- autoditype 6y ago> It's some student's final project in design class, and has no business on the front page. There's been worse things on the front page. The concept art is nice and well done, I enjoyed scrolling through it. But the subscription price is laughable
- uberman 6y ago"ARK 1 is an off-road, mobile dwelling" Made from 1/16th scale 3d printed maker parts? I am particularly impressed by the frying pan! All that can be mine for just $7,500 a month from their non-branded website, and I can reserve one now if I purchase a key chain for $100? Sign me up! "We ship worldwide. No refunds." Ya, imagine that.
- ncmncm 6y agoJust imagine it's on Mars, instead. If it seems entirely more plausible there, what does that mean?
- Lazare 6y agoThat is remarkably ugly. (To me, tastes vary, obviously, etc.)
- pavel_lishin 6y ago> Your ARK 1 subscription estimate: 365 days, ~12 month, $4,050/month So their premise is that because people can't afford to put money down on a home, they're going to ... pay $4k a month for an RV instead?
- vultour 6y agoThe robotic voiceover video, and "product range" that looks like it came from a miniature barbie house suggests this might not be very real.
- aappleby 6y agoAll renders, no reality.
- smt88 6y agoSeems like a design project. From the footer: > "© 2019 10:56 PM The Last Hour Inc (Perhaps) For the good death (Partly cloudy) Neither Instagram Nor Chrome Nor Angeles Nor Terms of use Nor support @ lot 2046 com (Good works) Payments by Stripe (Jeremiah 29:11) MADE IN 2046 Thanks bye"
- mrDmrTmrJ 6y agoIt's not the exact same idea, but Living Vehicle has an actual product you can buy as a travel trailer. https://www.livingvehicle.com/ https://www.livingvehicle.com/ (I have no affiliation with Ark1 or Living Vehicle)
- dj_mc_merlin 6y ago> Flattening density is the way forward. > Entire economies will need to re-evaluate what it means to give flexibility just as its users are realizing the boundaries of these new flexibilities. We’re already seeing an exodus of major metropolises. Lockdown hysteria has forced us to consider whether the paths we thought we prescribed ourselves is really ours. As this changes how many will choose to live, LOT is building a mission to earth. Did they GPT-3 this? It has the same uncanny valley feeling of word mash that almost has meaning.
- jitl 6y agoTo me it reads like the original Urbit writings. It’s not GPT-3. This is human creativity. I appreciate the vibe, it reminds me of text from a Ridley Scott setting.
- selfhoster11 6y agoMore like the Time Cube (see footer)
- aaron695 6y ago> > Flattening density is the way forward. I liked this sentence but had no idea what it meant. I was going to sit down and work it out. Which now I 'get it', it actually has meaning, so not GPT-3. Basically it's saying make society less dense, spread out. Squish high-rises down. Which since this is fiction is pretty boring fiction. They want to lower entropy. Crappy boring humans everywhere compared to mega cities and endless deserts and jungles. Drive for hundreds of miles and just see flat boring people. No Tyrell Corporation, no San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge shanty town, just people in little houses.
- BugsJustFindMe 6y agoAt the bottom of the page: > © 2/15/2021 04:52:35 PM THE LAST HOUR INC (PERHAPS) FOR THE GOOD DEATH (CLEAR -4ºF) NEITHER INSTAGRAM NOR SAFARI NOR RED DEER NOR TERMS OF USE NOR SUPPORT @ LOT 2046 COM (GOOD WORKS) PAYMENTS BY STRIPE (JEREMIAH 29:11) 52.2316,-113.8358 MADE IN 2046 THANKS BYE Hah. Cute art project I think.
- FpUser 6y agoHmm that bridge in Brooklyn proposition starting to make sense.
- boredpandas777 6y agoWe already had Ark II back in 1976, for those of you who were alive then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lj8z28Mshw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lj8z28Mshw

- nine_k 6y agoThe idea is interesting, the execution, doubtful. An RV + a car means you have a car to e.g. commute, while your home stays where you put it. Here you cannot commute as easily. I wonder how do you do grocery shopping while living at some picturesque country place, without a car or even a motorbike. I would see a normal RV retrofitted with these amenities (solar energy, a Starlink antenna, etc) a much more reasonable proposition for those who wants to live off-grid. BTW one of the things I see especially problematic when living in an autonomous home is water. Storing it, sparing it, recycling it. When you don't have a water pipe, or a 1000 gal water tank, not having enough water may be pretty nasty.
- molsongolden 6y agoIt looks like they plan to pull the Ark with a Jeep then do some autonomous roving after reaching a destination area.
- pavel_lishin 6y ago> I wonder how do you do grocery shopping while living at some picturesque country place, without a car or even a motorbike. Their subscription comes with, and I quote: - LOT Life subscription, basic self-care products - Remote smart address (delivery locker, automatic postal routing, DMV untethered, utilities) - Water delivery, food boxes So you don't do grocery shopping!
- nine_k 6y agoNow I can see how $7500/mo might make sense.
- client4 6y agoI always thought a Tesla camper would kill it. Extra power sled, reimagined hitch system, butterfly solar panels, auto leveling, and starlink, among other ideas.
- molsongolden 6y agoSome additional information here: https://2046lab.com/ https://2046lab.com/ Scroll down until the arrow navigation appears then click forwards, or continue scrolling. Ark 1 is the next project below Mercedes.
- BugsJustFindMe 6y ago> I open the window just a crack and lean my cheeks against the glass. Using "cheeks" in the plural makes this line far more hilarious than was probably intended.
- neilv 6y agoSomeone has to post the Slim version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_II https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_II https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyv9zxtgCCc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyv9zxtgCCc
- thebigspacefuck 6y agoTired of waiting 10 years to save 20% for a down payment on a house? Why not spend $7500/month on a depreciating asset that doesn’t even come with land?
- mikewarot 6y ago1 Drone for navigation/eyes? 2 is 1, and 1 is none
- PostThisTooFast 6y agoIs this a reference to the old Ark II show, which featured an advanced camper driving around a post-apocalyptic world doing good?
- jacknews 6y ago"Flattening density is the way forward." Truly no. We need nature to do it's thing, and that means removing ourselves from large swathes of it. Build beautiful cities, with parks, and urban farms (hydropnics etc), and leave everything else alone.
- bradgranath 6y agoI'm confused about where these are supposed to roam to. Are they expecting everyone to just fan out into the desert and just sit there? I definitely don't want one of these parked on my block.
