Ask HN: Do you want/need a Chrome Extension for HN? I want to give back to HN
Hi folks,
I have recently joined to HN and really enjoying the diverse set of articles and discussions here. Hence, I wanted to give back to the community! If you would like to have a Chrome Extension that would make your life easier on HN, please let me know. I plan to code the idea that gets the most upvotes and release it on Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It will be 100% free, just wanted to give something back to the community. Plus, I have free time these days so would be happy to work on something fun.
Cheers :)
- mooreds 6y agoWelcome to the community! I for one would not enjoy a chrome extension because I don't really install browser extensions.
- doganengin 6y agoThanks :) There is not any other response so maybe extensions are not that popular after all.
- mooreds 6y agoWould be fun to do an Ask HN for other features. I can think of a few, just not any that an extension would be a good fit for.
- helph67 6y agoOne feature that I wish HN contained is tags which would allow viewing search results by categories instead of specific words. Perhaps en extension using AI?
- doganengin 6y agoThis is a really cool idea but would require proper crawling and a server but I do not have money to rent a server so I will skip it for now. Really good idea however. Thanks :)
- AlexITC 6y agoI have seen people requesting a way to follow hn users, so that you get to know what those are commenting, thinking for a while, I'd actually use it. I was supposed to start working on it last weekend but didn't had the time, I'll use it if you release the source code. If you think about it, you can do everything on the client.
- doganengin 6y agoI will create a separate Ask HN and will implement it if people are interested in. I think it makes sense but wanted to check one more time as I have not received many comments to this post. I will reply back here also to keep you posted if I get some upvotes. Cheers :)
- doganengin 6y agoHi Alex, I submitted another Ask HN to check if this is something of interest but could not get much traction. Instead, I added Hacker News to one of my extensions which offers the functionality to tag/categorize people on Social Media. It is not what you asked exactly but may make your life a bit easier hopefully. The extension is called “Social Cat” and the Chrome link is as follows: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/social-cat/hhiomokjlngphblpfnccjckmkcpjjfmb?hl=en&authuser=0 https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/social-cat/hhiomok... Cheers
- eimrine 6y agoWant more than 30 news on a main page, because on my vertical ultrawide it looks half-filled. Also remove limit of comments on one page for same reason. BTW, the HN is the least pesky web-forum I've ever seen, you will have hard time to improve it.
- doganengin 6y agoI will check if I can embed this feature to Alex’s idea. Again, I will submit another Ask HN as there does not seem to be much interest for a Chrome Extension. I do not want to create something that does not contribute much to the community.
