Quite common, depending on what you're after.
Pornhub and its sisters recently dumped pretty much everything by unverified users thanks to an NYT hit-piece. Depending on your interests a lot of content went goodbye.
Youtube frequently delists music videos.
Creators sometimes remove old videos for various reasons.
Shit like this is why the cloud is not to be trusted.
- kleer001 6y ago> Shit like this is why the cloud is not to be trusted. Exactly. No such thing as "the cloud" it's just other people's computers.

- judge2020 6y ago> Youtube frequently delists music videos. I think you mean companies/YouTubers themselves - YT doesn't remove regular videos on their own very often. The content being deleted is still a problem and reason to save it though - many externalities might be reason for the uploader to remove videos (legal, purging a Google account, etc).
- tomc1985 6y agoThey do, through DMCA enforcement. But you are right that it is a combination of YouTube, publishers, and creators delisting things
- qwertay 6y agoDon't even trust "private" cloud storage. I used google docs in school and randomly they locked one of my documents that I needed to work on citing "tos violation". Week later the document was unlocked but I will never trust them again.
- bscphil 6y agoVideo essays with fair use clips will randomly get purged by content ID or direct DMCA enforcement, even months or years after the video is originally uploaded. Sometimes the creator will trim out those bits and reupload it, but of course the original video in your playlist maybe permanently dead. And if it's an older video (or inactive account) they may not bother fixing it at all.
- Minor49er 6y agoPornhub deleted videos that were unverified because a number of them involved children and victims of human trafficking and abuse. The group Exodus Cry set up a campaign called TraffickingHub to bring attention to it. The New York Times did report on it, but it doesn't qualify as a "hit piece": https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-rape-trafficking.html https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-ra...
- tomc1985 6y ago> Pornhub deleted videos that were unverified because a number of them involved children and victims of human trafficking and abuse. Indeed, but they through the baby out with the bathwater on that one. A tiny percentage of the content they deleted met that criteria.
- Minor49er 6y agoThey lost all of that content because they were not moderating their uploads to begin with. Whatever valuable content that was lost, if any, was purely because of their failure to police their own site.
- kmonsen 6y agoSo? Your original comment still say hit piece when it was in no way that and you seem to acknowledge that in the follow up.

- naikrovek 6y ago> Shit like this is why the cloud is not to be trusted. That's utter rubbish and I think you know it; you just want to complain about something. When you put something on your own server on the internet, that's "the cloud" to someone else. So your own stuff is "not to be trusted?" Other people own that stuff you say that you need access to. Other people pay for the hosting and the bandwidth. Other people consider whether or not to remove it. It's their stuff to do what they want with. Never in the life of that hosting agreement is it mentioned that you are guaranteed free access for life. Complaining that someone else is allowed to do what they want with their own stuff is the absolute height of insane privilege. Just like I can't tell you what you can do with your stuff, you can't tell other people what to do with theirs. Complaining that those people or institutions do what they want with their own things is ... I mean, who the hell do you think you are? really? I'll tell you who you are. You're some average, entirely forgettable techie who thinks they're special and smarter than everyone else here, and thus more deserving than others. you are not. You do seem to be one of the more entitled techies that I've ever had the displeasure of discovering on this site. People like you are coming up out of the ground like earthworms in a thunderstorm and it's turning the internet into a living cesspool. I am so tired of people feeling like the crap they enjoy on the internet is theirs - like they own it. not only do you mostly not own anything online, you aren't even necessarily entitled access to it. You own what you put up, and that's only if you specifically license it with those terms. Learn that fact and adjust, or face ridicule. "the cloud is not to be trusted" get off your high horse
