My eldest (early teen) is missing school because he can't hang out with his friends and do the teenage social interaction thing - no more lunchtime going into town and messing about.
My youngest (5) is missing school because he can't play with his friends or teachers - and he loved coming home to tell everyone what he learnt.
Depending on the age of the children, they actually do really want to be back at school - primary school was super fun (as I remember it) - learning the basics and it's all new things. To be honest, I think my eldest would even like to be back - just because it's not being at home.
Both are not liking doing work at home - it has basically made the place that we chill, watch tv, play in, into a pseudo school environment - which then puts a strain on family life.
Neither of us are trained to deal with teaching kids stuff in a structured way, and how to respond when they don't - certainly not the same as convincing someone to do homework.
A sliver lining may be that once everyone goes back, there may be opportunities to do work outside of a school setting if needed - and not have to worry about fines and falling behind.
