It's an odd article. I think Cade Metz wanted to write a broadly positive piece on SSC; the theatrics from last year generated some bad blood with the NYT; and the editors wanted a more negative piece. So Cade gave them one, even though his heart really wasn't in it and he wasn't really interested in putting Scott on blast.
- tptacek 6y agoOr the article was never really about putting Alexander on blast, and was always really about the broader SSC phenomenon, how it connects to the NRX psychos, and how that's just a hop or two away from SFBA power centers. That seems like an NYT article, more than a long profile about an obscure psychiatrist with a popular blog.

It does seem characteristic of NYT to think that “people discussing things on the internet” is something Very Serious People should be Concerned With.
- tptacek 6y agoI'm sorry, I don't know what you mean.

- AngrySkillzz 6y agoVery Serious People are Concerned With it...? Sam Altman and other tech power players are involved? I wouldn't call any of the Silly Valley people "serious" but they definitely have power and think they are serious.
