Show HN: See what was on memepool.com on this day in 1998-2013
- networked 6y agoI made this because when I was growing up I loved memepool (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memepool https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memepool), and the recent news about Del.icio.us made me want to revisit it. I picked the daily format because I think it is more fun and less overwhelming than just browsing the archive front to back or sampling it randomly. You can check the site once per day, and after a year you've seen it all (modulo leap year). Maybe it can also highlight trends in memetic content. Normal links are replaced with links to the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) on the closest date to when the link was published. This way you can hope to see the original thing of interest as it was at the time. Most links work or partially work. The site itself is static. It is generated with Deno and make(1) from a copy of memepool's timeline scraped from the Wayback Machine. It's built with modern HTML + CSS, so it is easier to use on phones than the archived original. It uses JavaScript to redirect you to the correct page with a <noscript> fallback menu. The last two pages of memepool's timeline under /Date/ weren't archived by the Wayback Machine, and I recreated them from snapshots of the front page. You can browse the source code at https://github.com/memeback/memeback.github.io https://github.com/memeback/memeback.github.io.
- ArtWomb 6y agoThis is solid gold. The entry for V-Day is delicious. Unfortunate Valentine's. R U Sirius starts a political party. Why Gnutella doesn't scale. Could spend hours browsing ;) And I really like the minimal style and chronological format for historical timeline data. There are a lot of archival resources coming online. And getting the presentation right is key to engaging new generations. Great stuff! https://archive.org/details/computerworld https://archive.org/details/computerworld
