U.S. chip industry calls on Biden administration to fund factories
- strangattractor 6y agoLet me get this straight. The chip industry wants the US government to fund rebuilding chip manufacturing plants in the US that they shipped offshore because it increased their profits. Why didn't I think of that.
- simonblack 6y agoYep. Western thinking never goes further than the next election, or the next earnings report, or the next Bonus received, etc. Much as we might knock Japanese long-term planning, or the Communist countries' Five-Year Plans, we have to recognise that those long-term plans work out best in the end.
- ffggvv 6y agowouldn’t that take years fo fix while this seems to be a short term shortage? i assume TSMC could ramp up before we can build factories
- simonblack 6y agoYes. But ..... It's a double-stream policy. TSMC (and all the other chip producers) are receiving income from the current fabs making (say) 10 nm chips, while they spend the time setting up the next more advanced (say) 5nm chip fabs. Then they advance to be selling 5nm chips while setting up the next (say) 3nm chip fabs.
- xxel 6y agoUS chip manufacturing factories will have Chineese workers/technicians/engineers? Who will do the job? Mexicans?
