UC Berkeley enforcing lockdowns w officers monitoring dorms outdoor exercise ban
- Bostonian 6y agoThis is inhumane -- even prison inmates are allowed to spend some time outdoors. And research has found that outdoor spread of covid in people not in crowds is minimal.
- nanis 6y agoIt looks like "Logan's Run" is relevant again ... It's beautiful outside but you are not allowed to go because we must control you. We'll ruin your youth and kill you when you reach 30. Go outside, get some vitamin D, get your heart rate up, expose your immune system to something other than dust mites.
- nanis 6y ago> The US government is quick to say that most prisoners at Guantanamo are not technically in solitary confinement because they can yell at each other through the gaps underneath their cell doors; they can talk to one another during recreation time; and they are allowed periodic ICRC and lawyer visits. The reality, nonetheless, is that these men live in extreme social isolation, cut off from family and friends, and even, to a large extent, from each other. They spend most of their days alone in totally enclosed cells ... [1] So, I guess, technically, the students are not in solitary either. - lambda_obrien 6y agoRead the article, it's for 2 weeks total to contain an outbreak that started on campus. It's not some government overreach.
- nanis 6y agoOn campus, university administration is a government. Also, > "You may NOT leave your room for solo outdoor exercise, which is a change from previous self-sequestering guidelines,” UC Berkeley’s campus housing webpage reads. “We are working with the City of Berkeley to determine whether outdoor exercise may be permitted, and we will provide more information on this in the near future." "City of Berkeley" is a government. This is definitely about overreach: By people who love any excuse to control other people. There is absolutely no requirement for them to even demonstrate the effectiveness of subjecting young, healthy people to prison-like conditions. The big, federal government does not have to do it arbitrary exercise of power by unaccountable officials to be offensive. > Students are only allowed to leave their rooms to seek medical care or coronavirus testing, use the bathroom and pick up meals from a dining kiosk. That is prison.
