The night of his death I was playing selected tunes to my wife, trying to explain his significance to me. She said, "Rachmaninoff... don't you hear Rachmaninoff in that?" [ I repeated the anecdote about Art Tatum. ] Finished my set with the Miles Davis concert on the Isle of Man, the last concert before Chick left that band. Amazing musician. Great to see so many here touched in the same way.
